A really lovely, large example of an 18th-century oak coffer with a hinged top formed of two solid oak planks with heavy robust Georgian hinges.
Distinctive and prominent medullary rays are visible in the oak to the front panels, with each having a moulded surround, which adds an elegant decorative touch.
Internally is a candle box on the left-hand side and a very large open interior in solid condition.
Supported on Stile legs front and rear, the whole piece has been very well constructed from fine quality oak. This would make an ideal bedroom or living room chest or could even be used as a sideboard because of its sheer size.
We have noted that the rear stiles have had latterly fitted bobbin feet. This is probably due to natural wear on the rear legs making the unit uneven.
