A wonderful 19th century hand coloured aquatint and etching depicting the honourable East India Company Ship Inglis leaving St.Helena July 1830.

Likely named for Captain Nathaniel Inglis, the ship Inglis was built by Caleb Martin Taylor in Penang for Robert Hudson of Fenchurch Street. It launched in 1811. Weighing 1,312 tons and measuring 133 feet long with a 43 foot beam, Inglis traveled to China three times via India between 1812 and 1818, commanded by Captain William Hay. In 1819-20, Captain Thomas Borradaile piloted the ship to China, and Inglis continued voyaging to China via India until, in 1834, she was sold out of the fleet for £9,150 to Richardson Borradaile. The Inglis was privately owned, wrecked in 1844.

Inscribed to the bottom of this image 'The Honourable East India Company's Ship Inglis, commanded by Joseph Dudman Esq leaving St Helena, in July 1830, In company with H.M. Frigate, Ariadne, and the H.C. Ships. Windsor, Waterloo, Scaleby Castle, General Kyd, Farquharson & Lowthe'.

Originally painted by W.J. Huggins, 1832, but this aquatint & etching after the engraving by Edward Duncan is more likely c.1860 / 1880.

The overall condition is excellent, with close inspection of the print showing a light crease to the right hand side where it has previously been folded .  Additionally, this piece has been freshly mounted and re-framed by my local framer and the end result with the new grey / green mount has given this image a real vibrancy.

Notes: William John Huggins (1781 - 1845) was an English painter. In his youth he was a sailor for the East India Company, traveling to Bombay and China. These experiences later informed his painting work. In 1830, he was named marine painter to William IV.

The engraver, Edward Duncan (1803 - 1882), was a printmaker and landscape watercolourist. He started his career as an engraver of sporting subjects but later only did paintings and prints of marine images. Along with exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and the British Institution and the Society of British Artists, he was as well a member of the Royal Watercolour Society.
